The Crossbow Brigades—Buekorpsene—are an important part of Bergeners identity. They are self-organised marching brigades, usually consisting of only boys up to some 18 years. In later years some of the brigades have accepted girls into their ranks, and there have been established girls-only brigades.
The fiercly military, but charming kids in uniform, competing for the most loud drumming, were established by boys in the town during the last two decennials before 1900. During this time, the adult men organised their shooters clubs—’Skytterlag’—as a preparation for the possible war to split out of the union with Sweden.
Buekorpsmuseet is located in the old town gate in Strandgaten, Nordnes, very close to the town centre.
